OGOH-OGOH CONTEST - Bali Beauty

A total of 20 pieces of ogoh-ogoh will jazz up the ogoh-ogoh parade in Denpasar. The street art performance will be held on the Pengrupukan, Monday (Mar 11) at the central intersection of Denpasar or Catur Muka Statue starting at 4:00 p.m. Participants joining the selection came to 169 pieces of ogoh-ogoh, but only 20 nominees were then selected in the assessment. “The number has increased from the previous year, amounting to about 152 pieces of ogoh-ogoh. Besides, it also showed an improvement in terms of quality, design, aesthetic value, use of accessories and materials in use,” said Dr. I Nyoman Astita, Chairman of the Organizing Committee. (BTN/015)

The ogoh-ogoh (papier mâché demon) competition will be held by Denpasar Culture Agency in relation to Nyepi (Day of Silence) celebration. Until Tuesday (Feb 26), at least 169 ogoh-ogoh effigies had been registered by customary youth club (STT) to be assessed. Jury panel will conduct the assessment in Denpasar area starting next Friday (Mar 1).

It was disclosed by Head of Denpasar Culture Agency, I Made Mudra, when met at the Mayor’s office last Tuesday. “We’ll attempt to complete the assessment within four days carried out until March 4. Therefore, each day is focused on one subdistrict and the assessment is made in turns,” he said.
Mundra said each district would send 5 best ogoh-ogoh effigies to be included in the parade at the roundabout of Catur Muka on the Pengerupukan Day, Monday (Mar 11). The assessment would not only be performed once, but several phases. “For the first phase, we start the assessment from the making process. When it has been completed, we will make another assessment,” said the former subdistrict head of West Denpasar.

Meanwhile, the Head of Public Welfare, Regional Secretary of Denpasar, I Gusti Bagus Mataram, said that a total of 450 youth clubs were registered in Denpasar. However, so far the participants of competition only came to 169 youth clubs.

Related to the making of the ogoh-ogoh, the municipal government had provided stimulant fund for each youth club. However, the funding worth IDR 3.5 million was not specifically intended for the ogoh-ogoh, but for the activities of creative economy. Total budget spent was IDR 1.46 billion.

“So, this assistance is to design our young generation so that they can grow the activities of culture-based creative economy in Denpasar,” said Mataram. In other words, he said, the assistance was not specifically for the making of the ogoh-ogoh, but for all the results of cultural creation made by youth clubs. “Renon makes no ogoh-ogoh. Therefore, it is not necessarily for the ogoh-ogoh, but for cultural creations, like performance, bleganjur or other cultural creations,” he explained. (BTN/kmb)
